RoadAI - Reducing emissions in road construction |
1.5% of Norwegian CO2 emission comes from construction machines. How can we use data to reduce this emission? |
NORA & partners are launching a new dataset competition: RoadAI - Reducing emissions in road construction. The focus of the challenge is to demonstrate how data can be used for more sustainable road construction. Sustainability can be interpreted as directly reduced emission, but also as minimizing construction time and impact on the surroundings. We recommend an exploratory approach when solving the set tasks and encourage innovation when developing solutions. The winner will be announced at the NordicAIMeet 2023, which will take place in Copenhagen on the 2-3 of October.
The participants will be provided with data from a road construction site in Viken including GPS data from dump trucks, machine data including daily fuel consumption, and drone maps of the construction site. In addition, we have a small dataset of vibration data from a subset of dumpers, and of course public data such as weather, maps etc.
The challenge is to demonstrate how the data can be exploited for road construction to become more sustainable. Sustainability can be interpreted as directly reduced emission, but also as minimizing construction time and impact on the surroundings. Important dates:

Bachelor students embarking on a NORA.startup journey! |
In NORA.startup, we firmly believe that working for startups is a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience, test their knowledge and build their CVs. Not only do students get the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge technologies that startups are developing, they also get a chance to showcase their skills and experience, and potentially secure positions or project-based work.
Before Christmas, NORA.startup matched two bachelor student groups in their third year from Kristiania University College working on their bachelor projects with two members of NORA.startup, namely Aiveo and Bergen Robotics. At the end of the Bachelor's degree at Kristiania University College (Department of Technology), students are expected to complete a Bachelor's project in collaboration with a company.
We talked to Aiveo and Bergen Robotics about their experience working with the students, and on our site you can now read their testimonials from working with the students! |

NAIC user needs questionnaire |
The Norwegian AI Cloud (NAIC) represents a crucial step in the country's AI strategy. As a national e-infrastructure, it aims to provide a broad and tailored service portfolio catering to academia, public administration, and industry. Notably, it brings together high-performance computing and AI capabilities, ensuring access to substantial computational power. It is envisioned as a bridge between local setups and large-scale supercomputers, making it an essential stepping stone in the AI journey.
This user needs questionnaire is critical as it helps shape the NAIC's services and infrastructure to best meet the specific requirements of the users, thereby driving effective AI adoption and application in Norway. |
| NAIC Technology Assessment - Competition |
The Norwegian Ai Cloud is an infrastructure project funded by the Norwegian Research Council that aims to provide easy access to AI/ML optimized, state-of-the-art computational power for Norwegian researchers, students, SMEs and their collaborators.
To achieve this goal we shall evaluate different technology choices with real use-cases. NAIC with its dissemination partner NORA would like to invite researchers, students, SMEs, vendors and engineers to team up and get involved in this process. |

Open positions at NORA partners |
Researcher within Machine Learning
At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a permanent position as a researcher within Machine Learning. The position is affiliated to externally financed projects. The first 3 years the position is financed by the Research Council of Norway, associated with the project “Retail Fresh”. An estimated 931 million tons of food were wasted in 2019 globally, and fresh produce amount to a significant portion of this food waste. Retailers must take large variations in demand, uncertainty in inventory, and varying shelf lives into account when ordering fresh produce. This makes it difficult to reduce waste. In this project, we aim to minimize wastage of fresh goods while sustaining retailer’s sales. We also aim to improve inventory management of fresh produce as part of this process. These goals will be achieved by using state-of-the-art machine learning methods.
Application deadline: 1st of June, 2023 For more information about the position, click here.
