The new year is upon us, and MultiLing started 2023 off with the arrival of our newly hired, long-awaited lab engineer, David Thornton. David previously worked at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C, and you can read more about his interesting background in this newsletter. We would like to give him a warm welcome to the University of Oslo and MultiLing!
MultiLing has several exciting events coming up within the next few weeks, starting with the annual PhD Winter School February 27- March 3: “Researching family multilingualism: Theoretical and methodological approaches”, organized by two of our experts in the field, Elizabeth Lanza and Seyed Hadi Mirvahedi. In this PhD course, multilingualism in diverse family types from various perspectives will be addressed.
On February 28th, we are organizing the annual event to honor the Mother Language Day. This year, Toril Opsahl og Oliwia Szymanska, have put together an exciting program which sheds light on meetings between Polish and Norwegian, both in the family and in the workplace. The author of the book “I'm not your Pole”, Ewa Sapieżyńska, will also take part in the event!
On March 6th, with funding from the Faculty of Humanities and the Young Academy of Norway, MultiLing organize the seminar: “How do we talk about race in Norwegian academia today?”. In this timely event the organizers, Haley De Korne and Rafael Lomeu Gomes, bring together scholars and students to discuss the terminology and approaches we use to talk about race in academia and how we best can support antiracism.
We hope you will enjoy the first issue of MultiLing Voices 2023 and happy reading!
With our best regards,
Unn Røyneland, Ingebjørg Tonne, and Anne Charlotte Lindblom
