Sweden leads the language race - and ask for more collaboration in the Nordics
- Digital sovereignity is very important for the future. Europeans must be in control of their digital future. In the Nordic region we have an opportunity to win an advantage if we cooperate, says Magnus Sahlgren, (midle), the scientific leader of AI Sweden's Natural Language program NLU. The Swedes are ahead in developing the next generation language models and are also integrating data from the other Nordic countries in a model called the Nordic Pile.
A delegation from NorwAI met with Magnus Sahlgren and the program director Francisca Hoyer (left) in Stockholm recently. Francisca Hoyer will present the Swedish language model GPT-SW3 in the session of Language Technology and Personalization on Day 1 at NorwAI Innovate.
Meeting the AI talents at the upcoming poster and demo sessions
Norway is home to many talented students in the field of Artificial Intelligence. This year's NorwAI Innovate Conference has invited them to present their work as demonstrations or posters. We have received numerous abstracts and will be reviewing them shortly.
Attendees can look forward to meeting Kaia, NorwAI's social robot, who has new abilities. A team of research assistants is behind the latest improvements, from left Håkon Bygdås Høgseth, Marte Eggen and Alexamder Ås.
We are also looking forward to demonstrations from our consortium. Schibsted will showcase a virtual weather expert. NTNU students will present their work on reinforcement learning and personalization. The demo/poster session will take place in the afternoon of 1 November 2022. Beforehand, the presenters will give a short pitch to describe their contribution. Please, come by and get in touch with the presenters
Hate speech, freedom of expression in an open conversation and fighting the surveillance society
Democracy and free speech faces challenges in internet times. Paolo Rosso has done research of fake news and hate speech detection. The conference also welcomes two ladies working for the benefit of an open conversation: Kjersti Løken Stavrum is president of Norwegian PEN, the Norwegian branch of the world’s largest organization for freedom of expression. She was head of the Norwegian government’s Commission on Freedom of Expression who presented it’s report in August 2022. She has been co-chair of the latets report from Forum on Information & Democracy (https://informationdemocracy.org) released this September. Fiona Coath of Thoughtworks introdices us to the men and women fighting surveilance. Fiona is exploring the role that the technology industry plays in shaping our perceptions of the world and how this enables them to alter the political landscape.
Ana Peleteiro Ramallo and her team at Zalando uses AI to help customers in their discovery journey and shopping experience among Europe's largest selection of trends and fashion.
Great workshop with researchers from The Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience and the Norwegian Open AI Lab at NTNU recently. Last year Nobel laurate Edvard Moser gave a keynote at NorwAI Innovate on possible collaboration. Now researchers from both sides investigate potentials for working closer. AI will benefit from the neuroscience community's input, and neuroscience needs the tools and advanced analytics from the AI community. As professor Emre Yaksi put it: "This is where neuroscience will go!"
- I look forward to see how this relationship will evolve, says director of the NAIL Lab, Trym Holter.
